About John Deere Warehousing Australia

John Deere is an American corporation that manufactures agricultural machinery, heavy construction equipment, forestry machinery, diesel engines, and lawn care products across Australia.

The Challenge

A John Deere warehouse supervisor needed to solve a recurring stocktake problem — but didn't know what scanner to buy, how to configure it, or how to connect it to their existing internal system.

  • The warehouse supervisor knew they needed wireless scanners but had no visibility into what product, technology or configuration was right
  • John Deere's IT team had a working internal platform they wanted to keep & any scanner had to communicate with it, not replace it
  • Buying an incompatible or incorrectly configured scanner would mean wasted spend, lost time and no easy way to reverse the decision
  • Without a connected wireless solution, counts were slow, error-prone and required double-handling of data

Our Solution

DataScan assessed John Deere’s stocktake workflow, existing internal system, and site environment to identify the most suitable scanning solution. Based on this assessment, batch-mode scanning was confirmed as the ideal approach for their stocktake requirements. DataScan recommended the Zebra CS6080 with Communication Cradle, providing reliable scanning without requiring Wi-Fi connectivity during the count. The scanner stores scan data locally and automatically transfers the data when docked in the communication cradle. DataScan worked closely with John Deere’s IT team to configure the scanner profiles, cradle settings, and data-transfer format to match their internal system. To ensure the solution met their operational requirements, DataScan provided an evaluation unit for hands-on testing. This allowed the team to validate performance, usability, and system integration before making a purchase commitment. The solution provided John Deere with a simple, reliable, and low-risk approach to improving its stocktake process.

Implementation Process

  1. 01

    Step 1

    Requirement Analysis

The John Deere warehouse supervisor contacted Data Scan with a clear problem but no technical starting point. Datascan expert discussed their requirements in detail.

  2. 02

    Step 2

    Solution Design

Data Scan's team worked through the customer's workflow requirements and rather than recommending a complex RFID or Wi-Fi solution, identified the Zebra CS6080 in batch mode as the most reliable, cost-effective and practical fit.

  3. 03

    Step 3

    Configuration

Data Scan worked alongside John Deere's internal IT team to configure the CS6080 for batch mode setting scan profiles, data output format and cradle communication parameters to match their existing stocktake system exactly.

  4. 04

    Step 4

    ROLLOUT

Following the successful evaluation, John Deere extended the solution across three of their Australian warehouse sites. Data Scan supported the rollout at each location by ensuring consistent configuration.

The Results

The Zebra CS6080 delivered a reliable and efficient stocktake solution that integrated seamlessly with John Deere’s existing system, without requiring major system changes. The wireless batch scanners reduced manual data entry and counting errors, helping staff complete stocktakes faster and more accurately. Following a successful trial, the solution was confidently scaled from one site to three Australian locations, with ongoing support from DataScan.

  • DataScan's assessment eliminated guesswork and delivered a purpose-fit solution without the customer needing any prior technical knowledge
  • The Zebra CS6080 was configured to communicate directly with John Deere's internal stocktake platform u2014 no system changes or replacement required
  • warehouse staff now conduct full stocktakes with wireless batch scanners, eliminating manual data entry and reducing count errors
  • from a single site evaluation to three fully operational Australian locations, with DataScan providing consistent support at every stage

“We came to Data Scan with a problem and no idea where to start. They listened, asked the right questions, recommended exactly the right product, and then worked with our IT team to get it configured and running. The evaluation unit gave us the confidence to roll it out properly — and now all three of our sites are running smoothly.”
